Fred Stephan Dead
Fred Stephan, 74 years of age, died at his home south of Winchester on Friday afternoon, Feb. 22, at 4:15 o'clock. Mr. Stephan had been confined to the bed for several days from a stroke of paralysis, which was the cause of his death. Mr. Stephan had resided in the vicinity of Winchester for a number of years and was one of his section's best citizens. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Winchester on Monday morning at 9 o'clock and interment was made in the Easton cemetery.

John Shughart, Retired Farmer, Succumbs Here
Taken to the Atchison hospital following a heart attack last Wednesday from his home, 927 South Sixth, John M. Shughart, 77, retired farmer and cement contractor, died there early today. He had been in failing health several months.
Born March 22, 1872, near Winchester, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Shughart, he grew to man hood in the Winchester community, and at Nortonville in 1896 married Miss Verna May King. They became the parents of five children, all of whom survive: Mrs. George Stephan, Warren, Ore.; Mrs. Lloyd Cave, 714 Q street; Mrs. George Zishka, Nortonville; Mrs. Otto Busch, Atchison, and Raymond Shughart, Colby. Mrs Shughart passed away in 1915. At Oskaloosa in 1921, Mr. Shughart married Anna McReynolds, whose death occurred in 1932. There are 28 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
After retiring from the farm, Mr. Shughart moved to Nortonville where he engaged in the cement contracting business several years before moving to Atchison about ten years ago. He was a brother of the late Alex Shughart, whose death occurred in 1939. Another brother, Andy Shughart of Winchester, survives. Mrs. Mattie Kaufman, 519 Riley, is a cousin.
Funeral services are pending. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sawin & Douglass funeral home.
